Как вы помните, в английском языке существуют три основных наклонения глагола. Это изъявительное (Indicative mood), условное (conditional mood) и повелительное наклонение (imperative mood). Эти же наклонения есть и в русском языке. В английском есть еще и сослагательное наклонение или subjunctive mood.

Конструкция I wish +глагол и ее применение на практике

Subjunctive mood в английском языке выражает желание говорящего о том, чтобы кто-то пришел, сделал, прочитал, сдал экзамен, встретился и т. д. То есть желание о каком-то действии.

Действительно, что это за конструкция и зачем она здесь? А ведь именно это грамматическое сочетание является одним из выражений сослагательного наклонения (subjunctive mood) в английском языке. Потому что subjunctive mood в английском имеет много конструкций, но сегодня мы говорим именно об «I wish + глагол ».

Данное сочетание переводится, как «я хочу, чтобы…, я бы желал, чтобы… ». Например:

• I wish you spoke with Jane about that affair. — Я бы желал, чтобы ты поговорил с Джейн о том деле.
• I wish Tom invited all our friends. — Я хочу, чтобы Том пригласил всех наших друзей.

Вместо местоимения I (я) может быть любое другое местоимение или имя, или существительное. К примеру:

• Andrew wishes he read all the books of Mark Twain. — Эндрю хотел бы прочитать все книги Марка Твена.
• She wishes she managed to speak with her teacher about her problems in English language. — Она желала бы успеть переговорить со своим учителем о своих проблемах в английском языке.

Конструкция «I wish + глагол» и времена глаголов

Данная конструкция в subjunctive mood требует после себя в английском языке определенного времени глагола. Здесь, уважаемые читатели, важно запомнить следующие два правила:

• Первое: Если I wish относится к настоящему или будущему времени, то следующий глагол за ней должен быть в простом прошедшем времени (Past Simple), либо вторая форма глагола, если это неправильный глагол. Прочтите данные предложения:

I wish you were here with me. — Я хочу, чтобы ты был здесь, со мной.
My sister wishes they worked more attentively. — Моя сестра хочет, чтобы они работали более внимательно.

• И второе: Если наша конструкция относится к прошедшему времени или сама в прошедшем времени, то есть I wished , то следующий глагол должен быть в давнопрошедшем времени (Past Perfect). Данный случай выражает прошедшее действие, чаще в нереальном, невозможном условии. Обратите внимание на следующие предложения:

John wished he had passed all the exams. — Джон желал бы, чтобы он сдал все экзамены (скорее всего он их не сдал, потому и желал бы).
Martha wishes she had met all her friends. — Марта желала бы встретить всех своих друзей.

ВАЖНО! Необходимо помнить, друзья, что, если мы используем конструкцию I wish + глагол to be , то сам глагол to be приобретает форму were, независимо от лица и числа. Например, прочитайте эти предложения и переведите их:

• I wish he were here. — Я хочу, чтобы он был здесь.
• Matthew wishes his mother were free on Sunday. — Мэтью хочет, чтобы его мама была свободна в воскресенье.
• Sandra wishes I were with her on her exam. — Сандра желает, чтобы я была с ней на ее экзамене.

Таким образом, данное правило доказывает нам, что это наклонение не просто сослагательное, а условно-сослагательное. Это и есть наш subjunctive mood.
Конструкция I wish и модальные глаголы

«I wish» и модальные глаголы

Данная грамматическая штука прекрасно дружит с модальными глаголами. В каком бы времени не стоял глагол wish, в настоящем или прошедшем, идущий далее модальный глагол стоит в простом прошедшем времени, то есть в Past Simple.

Только важно помнить, что каждый модальный глагол имеет свою форму в прошедшем времени. Обратите внимание на следующие предложения:

CAN: Andy wishes he could be stronger. — Энди желал бы, чтобы он мог быть сильнее.
MAY: Mary wishes she might spoke with her brother before the party. — Мэри желала бы, чтобы она смогла поговорить со своим братом до вечеринки.
MUST: We wished we had to be more courageous that day. — Мы желали бы, чтобы нам следовало быть более смелыми в тот день.

• John had shouted a lot. He had been very angry the day before yesterday. But he was sorry he had quarreled with his sister. He wished his sister had forgotten him. — Джон много кричал. Некоторые трудности возникают при восприятии придаточного предложения. Конструкция I wish синонимична выражению I want to (я хочу) или I would like to (я хотел бы), но с оттенком сожаления .

Например: Жаль, что я не убедил Анну пойти к доктору.

Эту фразу можно сказать по-другому: Я хотел бы убедить Анну пойти к доктору.

При переводе на английский язык это будет выглядеть так: I wish I convinced Ann to go to the doctor. (I want Annd to go to the doctor, получился, кстати).

Таким образом, надо просто запомнить, что при использовании конструкции I wish необходимо поменять утверждение на отрицание и наоборот .

I wish you didn’t go t here. Жаль, что ты пошел туда.

I wish you went there. Жаль, что ты НЕ пошел туда.

Жаль, что идет снег. I wish it wasn’t snowing.

Марии жаль, что мы НЕ можем пойти в театр. Maria wishes we could go to the theatre.

Уточним, в каком времени употребляется сказуемое в придаточном предложении.

Формы сказуемого в придаточном предложении

• Действие происходит в настоящем или будущем. Используется Past Simple (простое прошедшее время) или Past Continuous, если действие в процессе развития.
• Действие уже произошло. Используется Past Perfect (прошедшее совершенное).

Например:

I wish Alex could do it! Если б только Алекс смог сделать это!

I wish Alex didn’t do it. Жаль, что Алекс делает это.

I wish Alex had done it. Жаль, что Алекс НЕ сделал это.

I wish Alex hadn’t done it. Жаль, что Алекс сделал это.

Конструкция I wish…would выражает крайнюю степень недовольства сложившейся ситуацией.

Например:

I wish he would stop drinking. Жаль, что он никак не бросит пить! (Он пьет, меня это раздражает).

Грамотное употребление конструкции I wish украсит вашу английскую речь.

I wish I were

Отдельного внимания заслуживает конструкция I wish I were , а именно — искажённая форма Past Simple в данном примере (вместо привычного was в первом лице единственном числе мы встречаем were). Правильно ли так говорить? На самом деле, да. Строгая говорит, что нужно вместо I was говорить и писать I were. Видимо, это сложилось так потому, что это позволяет дополнительно подчеркнуть нереальность события . А в разговорном английском языке, а также в и сериалах говорят I wish I was, запомните это!

ПРЕДЛОЖЕНИЯ, НАЧИНАЮЩИЕСЯ С I WISH. Теория.

Особую группу сослагательного наклонения составляют предложения, которые начинаются со слов I wish (Как бы мне хотелось, чтобы...). В таких предложениях высказывается

• либо пожелание относительно изменения ситуации в настоящем (unreal present),
• либо сожаление относительно уже случившегося/не случившегося события в прошлом (unreal past).
• либо пожелания относительно изменения ситуации в будущем (desired future)

I wish в предложениях, относящихся к настоящему.

Предложения, выражающие желания и относящиеся к настоящему времени

Как бы мне хотелось, чтобы... / Жаль, что

• Simple Past
• Past Continuous
• could + infinitive без to

Примеры с переводом:

I wish it was not raining now. – Хотелось бы, чтобы сейчас не шел дождь. (Жаль, что сейчас идет дождь.)

I wish I could speak. French. – Хотелось бы, чтобы я мог говорить по-французски. (Жаль, что я не могу говорить по-французски.)

Обратите внимание!

В подобных предложениях глагол to be употребляется в форме сослагательного наклонения were (был бы, была бы, были бы) для всех лиц единственного и множественного числа.

I wish he were here now. – Хотелось бы, чтобы он был здесь. (Жаль, что его нет здесь сейчас).

I wish I were a pilot. – Как жаль, что я не летчик.

Предложения, начинающиеся с I wish, в которых высказывается желание относительно изменения ситуации в настоящем, соотносятся со (unreal present):

I wish I were lying on the beach at the moment. — If I were lying on the I beach, it would be better. — Как бы мне хотелось лежать сейчас на пляже.

I wish I knew the answer. = If I knew the answer, it would be better. — Как I бы мне хотелось знать ответ.

I wish I could get a better job. = If I could get a better job, it would be / better. — Как бы мне хотелось иметь лучшую работу.

Wish в предложениях, относящихся к прошлому.

Предложения, выражающие сожаление и относящиеся к прошедшему времени , на русский язык переводятся:

Как жаль, что...

Как бы мне хотелось, чтобы...

После wish в подобных предложениях употребляется

• Past Perfect,
• Past Perfect Continuous

I wish you had had time then. – Хотелось бы, чтобы у вас тогда было время. (Жаль, что у вас тогда не было времени.)

I wish I had known that Ann was ill. – Жаль, что я не знал, что Анна была больна.

Предложения, начинающиеся с I wish, в которых высказывается сожаление относительно уже случившегося/не случившегося события в прошлом, соотносятся с :

I wish I had met him earlier. = If I had met him earlier, it would have changed my life. — Как жаль, что я не встретила его раньше. Если бы только я встретила его раньше...

I wish I had been wiser. = If I had been wiser, I wouldn’t have done I such a silly thing. — Как жаль, что я не была мудрее. / Если бы только я была мудрее...

I wish I hadn’t eaten so much chocolate. = If I hadn’t eaten so I much chocolate, I wouldn’t feel ill now. — Как жаль, что я съела так много шоколада. / Если бы только я не съела так много шоколада...

I wish в предложениях, относящихся к будущему.

Если действие, выраженное сказуемым дополнительного придаточного предложения, выражает желание изменить что-либо в настоящем или будущем, то после wish используется

• would + инфинитив

I wish he would stop lying. – Хотелось бы, чтобы он перестал лгать.

Предложения, начинающиеся с I wish, в которых высказывается пожелание относительно будущего, соотносятся с :

I wish he would stop lying. – If he stops lying it will be better.

Предложения с if only.

Вместо слов I wish может употребляться if only . Такие предложения более эмоционально окрашены по сравнению с предложениями с I wish. На русский язык они могут переводиться словами «Если бы только...», «Как бы мне хотелось...».

If only I were rich. – Если бы только я была богатой. = I wish I were rich.
